"Self Reliance"- Caring and Patience
We are going to talk about the story “Self-Reliance” and two values called caring and patience. When you are a caring person, means that you appreciate other people and you feel the need to protect them, and give them your love and attention. And when you are a patient person it means that you wait for people or situations or something to change. The value in the story is being self reliant, which means that you don't rely in other people to do what you want to do, and people do not choose for you or what people say or think does not affect you, you only trust your opinion on yourself.
In my point of view, i do not see these values in the story but not because a person who is self reliant or is trying to learn it is not caring or patient but because i don't think those two values were what the author was trying to teach or reflect about. When you care about a person you give a lot of focus to them and you try to be as patient as you can with them, but if you try to be self reliant you can't focus on yourself. Also if you depend on other peoples love and affection, care for you, if they leave you or disappoint you, you wont have someone to lean on other than yourself and that is why being self reliant is important. When you are very patient on others you tend to end up sacrificing a lot of things to wait on them, which is the opposite aspect of what Ralph Waldo Emerson tries to teach us on his story. The author also talks about ignoring and not paying attention to the people who do not support you or try to change you, or try to decide what you should do with your own life, and being patient with this people will only make the try to control your life more.
Of course this are not all the cases because self reliant people can also be caring and patient, but if you try to follow the author’s teaching you will probably not learn much about this values. I don’t think the author included this two values in the story like he did with others, like nonconformity and trust which are two of the most important topics talked about in this essay, because they are not important for the development of self reliance. In conclusion to this essay, we have to learn about not letting self reliance stop you from being kind or patient to others, because that is the whole point of self reliance in this essay, not letting others dictate your life and living by your own rules. Because people like Socrates and Jesus or more of the people at the end of the essay lived self reliance a certain way, or depended on kindness and patience or were known by that, or weren’t know for them, means you have to have them or not.
